Tech freshman Trey Bonner named OVC Newcomer of the Week
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Tech tailback Trey Bonner was named Sunday as the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week after the walk-on freshman paced the Golden Eagle ground attack in the 62-10 victory over Valparaiso Saturday afternoon.
Bonner, a 5-foot-9, 200-pound freshman from Bolton High School in Memphis, rushed 12 times for 143 yards and scored three touchdowns as Tech won its ninth straight game in Tucker Stadium. After scoring on runs of two and 21 yards, he broke free for a 49-yard TD scamper to finish the game's scoring. The final run was Tech's longest running play of the season.
His three touchdowns is tied for the most this season in the Ohio Valley Conference, matching Eastern Kentucky All-America candidate C.J. Hudson who had three TD runs against Appalachian State.
He was one of four players honored by the league Sunday. Eastern Illinois receiver Will Bumphus was named Offensive Player of the Week and Eastern Kentucky tackle Marcus Adams earned Defensive Player of the Week. Andre Raymond of Eastern Illinois was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week.
