At the Better Business Bureau's annual luncheon event, Tonya Jones of Nashville, TN was named 2006 Better Business Ambassador of the Year and Beth LeAnn Herren of Algood, TN was named the BBB's 2006 Student of Integrity. Over 400 attendees gathered at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel to celebrate the honorees and their commitment to ethics and integrity. Jack O. Bovender, Jr., Chairman/CEO of HCA spoke to a full house gathered for the annual event.
This year, BBB received over 90 nominations from throughout Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky for the 2006 Better Business Ambassador of the Year. Since 1998, BBB has presented an Ambassador Award to an individual who, through their own character, leadership and integrity furthers the BBB mission. This award is the highest recognition given to an individual by the Better Business Bureau.
The selection process was a difficult one for the independent panel of judges says Greg Boucher, Chairman of the Ambassador Committee. Each of the Finalists exemplify key traits and principles that establish character of a business leader. Each lives out all that is right with business in America and all that is necessary for long term personal and professional success.
Kathleen Calligan, President & CEO of the Better Business Bureau announced the recipient of this year's award to a crowd in suspense who had just heard from each of four finalists. Each year, she said, the selection gets more difficult. These four individuals represent the best-of-the-best. Ed Rufo, the 2003 Ambassador, presented the award to Jones and Mary Scales, 2005 Ambassador, presented her with flowers. After a standing ovation, Jones remarked I am totally surprised and very humbled at this recognition. The Better Business Bureau and what it stands for sums up all that I want to be remembered for, she said.
At the luncheon BBB announced its 2nd annual Student of Integrity Scholarship Award. Principals and Guidance Counselors of 45 participating High Schools in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky nominated 73 'Student(s) of Integrity'. The scholarship guidelines for nomination went far beyond the traditional criteria of academic excellence or financial need, says Student of Integrity scholarship sponsor Don Kimbrell of Blue Cross Blue Shield, Each student was required to write an essay describing an ethical situation the student has experienced in their family, school or work; the choices they faced in solving the issue; their decision and results; and how the issue and their decision affected them and others involved. An independent panel of judges selected 5 Finalists from the 73 students who submitted their essays.
Beth LeAnn Herren, Upperman High School in Baxter, Tennessee was named the 2006 Student of Integrity. Herren, of Algood, TN has been accepted to attend Vanderbilt University and plans to pursue a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Beth Herren has been a presence from the time she began her secondary education experiences with Upperman high School in the seventh grade writes Sherran Upchurch, her guidance counselor who nominated Herren. Academically, few students have exhibited the determination, motivation, and need to learn as has been constant with Beth. She approaches every task, every challenge with a vigor, enthusiasm, and commitment to excellence that has enabled her to shine brightly among her peers. While maintaining an unwavering focus on her own exemplary academic development, she somehow commits the time and effort to support and inspire her family, friends, and fellow students through selfless giving of herself. Beth's Student of Integrity Essay is entitled, It's Not Like Anyone Will Notice, a real-life story of workplace honesty.
Like the Better Business Ambassador of the Year award, the Student of Integrity personifies the principles of ethical business and qualities such as trust, leadership, fairness, community service, academic integrity, humility courage, compassion and respect. The Student of Integrity was awarded a $3,000 scholarship, the opportunity to enter a Mentor-Prot_g_ Program with Tonya Jones, Better Business Ambassador of the Year, and a Scholarship to Dale Carnegie 12-week Leadership Training.
