If you are the typical car owner, you may not know much about the mechanics of your vehicle... When its time for repairs, however, you should know how to locate a reliable and qualified auto service center. If you have a problem with your vehicle while its still under warranty, follow the manufacturer's requirements, which will include having repairs and regular maintenance made at an authorized dealership, to keep your warranty in effect.

If your car is no longer under warranty and you're looking for an independent repair shop you can trust here's some basic tips to take the fear and the mystery out of auto repair.

** WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A REPAIR SHOP:
Look for an auto repair shop BEFORE you need one. Waiting until your car breaks down and you have an emergency situation will leave you vulnerable with no basis for a sound decision.

Before you need a major repair visit several repair shops, ask to talk to the owner or manager, introduce yourself and get a "feel" for the people you will entrust your vehicle.

Stick with one auto repair shop that you have developed a relationship with, don't bounce around. The mechanic will know you and your vehicle and that relationship will be priceless when you need emergency service or have a major repair.

** GET TO KNOW YOU VEHICLE:
The more you know about your vehicle, the more likely it is you can head off problems. Many common vehicle problems can be spotted by using your senses. Learn to regularly inspect the area around your vehicle, listening for strange noises, sensing a difference in the way your vehicle handles can save you the expense of big repair costs.

** PREVENTTIVE MAINTENANCE IS A MUST
What are the consequences of postponing regular oil changes and other maintenance? Costly repairs and the value of yur auto investment. Many parts of your vehicle are inter-related, ignorig maintenance can lead to failure of other parts or an entire engine system. Neglecting even simple preventative maintenance, such as changing the oil or checking coolant, can lead to major repair problems and costly breakdowns.

** DON'T SHOP PRICE ALONE:
It's important to remember that you are not just paying for the price of the parts and the time it takes to install, but for the professional expertise and skill of the technicians. The best auto repair shops have extended service hours, service trucks for emergencies, and computer diagnostic equipment to access technical information, service bullentins and recall notices from auto manufacturers.

Auto repair and service doesn't have to lead to consumer fear or dissatisfaction. There are many professional, well managed auto repair centers in our community. So get to know who you want to do business with, check the repair shop out with the BBB at www.gobbb.org and enjoy a long and happy relationship with your automotive technician.
