November 8, 2003 COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Tech midfielder Alexis Boyd has been named to the 2003 Academic All-District IV University Division Soccer Team, repeating the honor she won a year ago. A senior from Germantown, Tenn., Boyd wrapped up her four-year career by establishing a new school record for most games played, appearing in 78 contests. In her final season, she started all 20 matches and contributed three goals and three assists for nine points to rank fifth on the squad in scoring. She is a history major with a 3.88 grade point average. "It's always an honor to receive any type of award, but especially an academic award," said Boyd. "It shows that all the hard work pays off when you receive something like this." For Boyd, the end of Tech's 2003 season signals a likely end to her soccer career. "It's been a long haul, and now that it's over I'm happy to move on, but there's also a big part of me that's going to miss the last 15 years of soccer." "The hardest part is not being around a group of girls that you spend almost every day with," she said. "I'll really miss my teammates and my coaches." A second-team selection, Boyd is one of only three players from the Ohio Valley Conference listed among the 35 chosen to the first, second and third teams. District IV includes all Division I women's soccer teams in Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan. "Alexis was an important part of our team this season," said first-year coach Patrick Farmer. "It was a real asset to have someone with her qualities serving as a co-captain. She's a leader on and off the field, and I feel fortunate that she was part of my first team at Tennessee Tech. "She exhibited tremendous dedication, not only to the sport but also to her work in the classroom, and is truly deserving of this type of recognition," Farmer said. The two others from the OVC are Melissa Aquino of Austin Peay, who joined Boyd on the second-team, and Ginger Schmitt of UT Martin on the third-team. Boyd's selection is the third for the Tech soccer program in the past three years. Julie Tryon earned the program's first academic all-district award in 2001, while Boyd previously won the honor in 2002. Boyd's award is the 71st academic all-district pick for TTU since 1985.
