ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Freshman Braxton Hunter carded the team's low score and tied for 20th place individually as Tennessee Tech jumped a spot in the standings on the second day to finish in fifth place among 19 teams at the Winthrop Waterford Invitational.

With that strong performance, Tech goes 14-4 in the event and improves its record this spring to 28-6 and 80-12 overall for the season. Tech plays next on March 21-22 at the EKU Spring Invitational in Richmond, Ky.

The Golden Eagles shot a 302 on the first day and found themselves in sixth place, then improved by a couple strokes to fire a team total 300 in the second round. That allowed coach Bobby Nichols' team to jump ahead of American University which slipped all the way to 11th. Charleston Southern (581) won the championship by four strokes over Mercer University (585), with host Winthrop (590) in third place and Gardner-Webb (597) in fourth. Tech's 602 was next, followed by Western Carolina (608). Jacksonville (Fla.) University and High Point tied for seventh at 609.

Senior Jason Cox and sophomore Polk Brown were next in the standings for Tech, tied for 28th place after carding 36-hole totals of 156 each. Junior Ryan Greer and sophomore Eric Anderson tied for 33rd place, each finishing with 156 scores.
