Golden Eaglettes lose 73-58 decision at Austin Peay

The baskets must have seemed about as small as a quarter to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eaglettes as they shot a frigid 23 percent from the field in the second half Monday night in a 73-58 loss at Austin Peay State University. The loss dropped the Golden Eaglettes to 10-15 overall and 5-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Austin Peay improved to 22-3 on the season and 14-0 in conference play.
The two teams battled valiantly in the first half Monday night. Austin Peay jumped out to as much as a nine-point lead only to watch Tech outscore the Lady Govs 7-2 over the final 2:30 of the first period to reduce the APSU advantage to 33-29 at the intermission. But that's when things went cold for Tech as the Golden Eaglettes hit five of 21 attempts from the field in the final 20 minutes of action. The Lady Govs, on the other hand, shot 50 percent from the field in the final period and outscored Tech 40-29 in the half to provide the final 15-point margin.
Emily Christian led Tech with 24 points, while Tynisha Alexander contributed 11. Jenna Baltimore added seven points, while Jennifer Simpson added four points and eight rebounds. Casey Bradford had four points and six rebounds. Tech shot 34 percent from the field (16-46), 30 percent from 3-point land (3-10) and 92 percent from the charity stripe (23-25). The Golden Eaglettes had 28 rebounds, nine assists, one blocked shot and seven steals. Austin Peay was led in scoring by Brooke Armstead and Gerlonda Hardin with 17 points each. Kera Bergeron had 15 points, while Ashley Haynes chipped in with 14 points. and a game high of nine rebounds.
The Lady Govs shot 50 percent from the field (27-54), 31 percent from beyond the arc (6-19) and 86 percent from the free-throw line (13-15). Austin Peay had 30 rebounds, 18 assists, three blocked shots and seven steals. The Golden Eaglettes wrap up their regular season this week with home games against Southeast Missouri on Thursday, February 27, and Eastern Illinois on Saturday, March 1.
