Golden Eagles open Clemson Invitational with victories over West Virginia, Florida A&M

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Paced by singles victories from Gernot Fischer, Razvan Ilie and Luis Aguerrevere, the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles opened the Clemson University Invitational this weekend with victories over West Virginia University and Florida A&M University.
Against the Mountaineers, Tech rolled to victory in four of the six singles matches to grab the win. Fischer, playing No. 1 for the Golden Eagles, knocked off Eric Kochanski, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. Ilie took the No. 2 singles match with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Tony Epney. Aguerrevere lost only six games at the No. 3 spot, beating J.R. Randall, 6-4, 6-2. Will Chappell wrapped up the victory for Tech by winning his singles match at the No. 4 position, beating Ian Bliss, 6-3, 6-4.
Michele Panzeri lost to Julian Mesa, 2-6, 1-6 at the No. 5 spot and Rodrigo Cuesta lost 4-6, 2-6 against West Virginia’s Kyle Markham at the No. 6 spot. The doubles matches were not played.
The hot playing continued later in the day for Tech as the Golden Eagles knocked off Florida A&M University, 4-1. Tech captured the doubles point and then sealed the victory by winning three of the first four singles matches.
Fischer and Aguerrevere teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles match, 8-3. Illie and Chappell took the No. 2 doubles match, 8-0. Panzeri and Cuesta were beaten 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.
Fischer opened up the singles action by winning 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 1 position. Aguerrevere allowed only three games in his 6-2, 6-1 victory and Ilie captured the No. 3 singles position with a 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 win.
The Clemson University Invitational continues through Sunday.
