Re: THP STATEMENT ON SMOAK FAMILY INCIDENT

By S. Gilbert

January 10, 2003

I could not believe my eyes, when I saw the video of this family being forced out of their car and being handcuffed like common criminals. Then their beloved family dog, who is clearly not aggressive, wagging his tail, gunned down in front of this traumatized family on vacation. What an absolute nightmare that will stay with this family for years. I know there are policies and procedures stating how this situation should be handled, but common sense should be present in this scenario. I mean, really! A robber with his family and beloved pets along for the ride? Coming from a family who values the love of our dogs as a true family members, I can imagine the devastation this family is experiencing. I have four dogs, two of which were rescued, when a past owner had no business having a pet. It's obvious how much these pets meant to these people, which is exhibited by the fact, they were on vacation with them. These officers, and I use that term loosely, were clearly on some power trip and should not be wearing a badge. My heart goes out to the Smoak Family.

Additionally, my business takes me to Cookeville about three times a week. It now makes me a little nervous, knowing what kind of treatment could befall me on one of my trips.

On another note, I urge people when getting a pet, make sure you have the proper accommodations. Don't let you dog run free, Don't stick your pet in the yard on a chain and forget about him. Make sure your dog has lots of love and attention and protected from bad weather & anything that may harm him. Dogs can be pretty smart, but they still have certain instincts that may drive them to run across a busy street, chasing a cat, or be drawn to antifreeze on a driveway. Be responsible and don't let your pets be a nuisanse to your neighbors. When you decide you can live up to the responsibility go to your local humane society or check out http://www.grreat.org/ or
