Tech 3, Samford 2 (Oct. 30 in Cookeville)
The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagle soccer team had two reasons to cheer after Wednesday's match against visiting Samford University, a team which will join the Ohio Valley Conference next season. First, the Golden Eagles tied a school record with their 12th win after a 3-2 victory over the Bulldogs, and secondly, the Golden Eagles also qualified for the OVC tournament via Southeast Missouri's 2-1 overtime win at Murray State. The Golden Eagles, now 12-4-1, concluded the home portion of their schedule on a high note, out shooting the Bulldogs 34-10, and they also tied the school record for most goals in a season with 43. Tech ended the home schedule 5-1 in 2002. In Wednesday's match, Tech came out strong in the first half, holding a 14-3 advantage in shots and a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard at halftime. Freshman Jill Burns scored her 14th goal of the season at 22:01 after an assist from sophomore Robyn Vince, who notched her 17th assist of the year on the play. The Golden Eagles struck again quickly in the second half. At 51:42, sophomore Kylie Hammer tallied her second goal of the season to give Tech a 2-0 lead. Burns assisted on the play, her second assist of the season. Burns then scored her 15th goal just three minutes later to give her team a three-goal advantage. Sophomore Alexis Boyd was credited with her first assist of the season on the play. Marian Wagner and Lindsay Shanks scored goals for Samford late in the second half, but the Golden Eagle defense stepped up at the end to preserve the win. Burns led Tech with eight shots, six of which were on goal, while Vince had seven shots and Hammer had six. The Golden Eagles also held an edge with 7 corner kicks compared to one for the Bulldogs. The Golden Eagles final regular contest will be Sunday at Chattanooga in a 2 p.m. kickoff.
